An electronic cigarette cartridge, sometimes called a mouthpiece, filter or cart, is the top part of an e-cig. The counterpart to an e-cig cartridge on a tobacco cigarette would be the filter. Currently manufactured in black or brown, electronic cigarette cartridges come with either a whistle-shaped, tapered end or the more familiar rounded end.  

Cartridges can be purchased pre-filled with e liquid, a liquid nicotine solution which is the 'fuel' for an e-cig.  When the cart is depleted, you can simply throw it away and replace it with another pre-filled cart or if you prefer, you can refill it yourself.

An electronic cigarette cartridge contains a small piece of absorbent material, the cartridge filler, which is impregnated with a flavoured liquid nicotine solution in your preferred strength from zero to low, medium or high.

This nicotine liquid solution, which is most commonly referred to as e liquid, e-juice or smoke juice (for ease we'll call it e liquid), can also be purchased in bottles for refilling cartridges at home.

The length of time each electronic cigarette cartridge lasts before it needs replacing or refilling depends largely on the model type and how often it's used. 

However, some e-cig suppliers make inaccurate claims that a single cartridge is equivalent to 20 cigarettes. This is simply not true!

Obviously, lighter use of an e-cig means fewer carts, but in our experience a typical 20 a day smoker might expect to use between 3 and 5 carts a day.
