An e cig atomiser is the heart of an electronic cigarette (or Personal Vaporiser as it's also known). The middle of the three component parts of most e-cigarettes, the atomiser sits in-between thecartridge and battery.
The job of an e cig atomiser is to heate liquid. This results in a cloud of vapour which can then be inhaled and exhaled in the same way as cigarette smoke.
When looking inside an atomiser, a metal mesh 'bridge' is usually visible. Electronic cigarettes are designed so that e liquid contained in a cartridge comes into contact with this mesh.*
Through capilliary action, the mesh acts as a road along which e liquid travels to a heating element buried deeper within the atomiser. Then, when a vaper draws on their e-cigarette, the battery supplies the power to heat the element which rapidly evaporates the e liquid and results in a plume of vapour.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF E CIG ATOMISER
There are two main types of atomiser - enclosed and exposed - and both work equally well.
Exposed atomisers, which are usually smaller than their enclosed counterparts, have their wire-mesh 'bridge' fully exposed.
An enclosed atomiser is usually a longer tube with its wire mesh bridge nestling at the bottom.
This type of atomiser makes life easier if you prefer using the dripping method (see dripping e liquid directly onto an e cigarette atomiser) rather than cartridges, because any misplaced drips will simply roll down the tube walls and onto the bridge - their intended destination.
THE CARTOMISER (DISPOSABLE ATOMISER)
A relative newcomer to the atomiser family is the disposable cartomiser. Cartomisers incorporate both a pre-filled cartridge and an atomiser in one piece. An average 'super' electronic cigarette size cartomiser should last for between 250-300 puffs or inhalations.
Depending on how heavily it's used and the care it receives, the lifespan of an e cig atomiser could be anywhere between 14 and 60 days and sometimes well beyond. Most suppliers recommend atomisers are treated as consumables which will need replacing in time.
*A popular technique known as dripping is also an efficient means of delivering e liquid to an electronic cigarette atomiser.
